A Walk to an Old Military Bunker

The old military area near El Toro is one of my favorite places for a walk when I’m looking for some peace and quiet. Most of the time, there aren’t many people around. Except around sunset – especially in the summer months, it can get a little busier.

I’ve been here several times in the late afternoon and stayed until sunset. Of course, always with Lilly and usually with a little picnic packed. 😉

Right at the beginning of the route, in the residential area, there’s a concrete platform with some really nice views. Around sunset, lots of Spaniards come here for a walk, a bit of mountain biking or simply to enjoy the evening.

If you’re up for a little adventure, you can also walk down the steep slope from there. Hidden below is a small cove that you would normally only reach by a small boat or jetski. We sometimes take our jetskis there – it’s usually nice and calm with very little swell.

The route through the old military area itself is surprisingly easy to walk. It was originally built for military vehicles, so the path is wide and well maintained. You can simply keep walking towards the bunker. If the gate is closed, just walk through – it isn’t locked.

What I particularly like is that you can climb onto the roof of the old bunker. It’s similar to the Albercutx Watchtower – only the bunker is much flatter and much easier to access. Once you’re up there, you get a really nice view along the coast and towards the Malgrats Islands.

For me, the old military area is less interesting because of all the abandoned buildings you’ll often see mentioned in other posts. I much prefer the walk, the views and especially the atmosphere in the evening.

A lovely spot where you’ll mostly find locals.

Getting there is a bit of an adventure, haha. Just like...
